Fly Dressing Program 2006 to 2007 The course will be run from Monday 6th November 2006 until 26th February 2007 with a short break for Christmas and the New Year. The intention of the course is to teach fly dressing and tying techniques as opposed to tying specific types of fly. Having said this however two flies will be tied each evening to develop the tiers skills and introduce them to new techniques. The techniques will be appropriate to the level of skill and experience that each individual tier has with a view to push the boundaries of that tiers skill. A calendar of planned evenings is detailed below and is flexible and can be changed to meet the needs of the students. These needs will be established on the first night of the course. Monday 6th November 2006 Establish who has what experience and what the individual students want from the course. Arrange availability of tools and vices together with materials for the coming weeks. Explanation of tools and vices and the merits or otherwise of them. To learn a basic half hitch. To learn a hand whip finish. To learn to use a whip finish tool. Monday 13th November 2006 To learn to tie a basic Ammonite nymph for trout or grayling. Size 12 or 14 tiemco 200R or similar type curved nymph hook. An alternative hook is a Kamasan B100 or B110 curved grub hook. Olive silk Either thin .05 mm black foam or centre pheasant tail. Thorax material olive dubbing. Legs English partridge breast feather dyed olive or yellow. Mega shine nail varnish. This fly will be tied in two different ways to develop the skills of all the tiers present. Learn to tie a Hair wing Willie Gun. Size 8 hook of choice single, double or treble. Gold oval tinsel in fine or small. Black floss silk Either squirrel hair or bucktails in yellow, red, orange and black. Collar hackle of black cock. Monday 20th November 2006-11-05 To learn to tie an olive quill wet fly. Size 12 or 14 wet fly hook (Kamasan 175 or 170) Peacock Eye feather. Olive dyed cock hackles. Mallard wing quills. Olive or black silk. To learn to tie Alun’s American Express seatrout fly. Size 8 or 6 long shank streamer hook Silver mylar tinsel Black silk 210 denier(i.e. thicker silk or black floss silk) Black squirrel hair Peacock sword feather Red cock hackle Monday 27th November 2006 To learn to tie weaved flies Beginners will learn the pot weave and more advanced tiers the shuttle or parallel weave. Chenile in two colours and large hook for learning the technique Beginners will need a size 10 curved grub hook (i.e. Kamasan B110) Fine olive micro chenille. Mega shine nail varnish. Lead wire More advanced students. 4 strand floss in dark brown and light olive/yellow. Lead wire for under body. Uni nylon tying silk in white (70 denier). Black tying silk. Red game cock hackle. Due to learning of these new skills only one fly will be tied this night. Monday 4th December 2006 Klinkhammer Emerging dry flies. Either partridge Klinkhammer hooks size 16 or size 16 or 14 tiemco 200r or similar. Fine synthetic tan dubbing. Peacock herl. Siliconised polypropylene. Tan coloured tying silk size 8/0 or less. Danville’s spider web tying silk. Red Game cock feather. You will need an extended whip finish tool to be able to finish off this fly. To learn to tie a feather winged Blue Charm salmon fly. Single or double salmon iron size 8. Golden pheasant crest feather. Silver oval tinsel size fine. Black floss silk Blue Cock hackle. Bronze Mallard flank feathers. Monday 11th December 2006 To learn to tie Gwilym’s Olive dry fly Size 18 dry fly down eyed hook. Rabbit or mole skin 8/0 primrose yellow tying silk (multi strand and unwaxed) CDC feathers To learn to tie the Ally’s shrimp. Size 8 double or treble salmon iron. Orange bucktail. Silver oval tinsel(fine) Red floss Black floss Natural squirrel tail Black squirrel Tail Orange cock hackle Silver and pearl crystal hair. (optional) Break for Christmas and resume course on Monday 8th January 2007. |
