Fishing Report 2nd August 2005 | Print |
Trout.

This is the first of the reports for this beat of the River Usk.

It is dependant on the information supplied by its members and permit holders.

The rains of last weekend have given a much need boost to the low water levels of the past few weeks. It was getting to the point where trout were becoming stressed when caught and were proving difficult to return fully recovered.

However the freshening of the river has again revitalised the trout.

There are still hatches of Yellow May Dun appearing but is reduced numbers. It has been a tremendous year on the river with the various tyings of this pretty upwinged fly.

Hatches of medium olive, Turkey Duns and occasional Iron Blue Duns are a daily occurence.

For those of you who are in any doubt as to what to fish I think that a suitably sized (16's or 14's) dry Hares Ears should serve you well chnaging to a sedge later in the evening. I have not heard of anyone catching on the Large Red Sedge this year. This used to a banker fly fished with a wake as the light was fading.

I would fish the evenings with confidence and do not be worried to fish to small.

Salmon.

A number of fish have been in the beat for the past few weeks.

I have had reports from both Graham Anthony and Ian Caple that the have at different times had offers from Salmon which have resulted in fish being hooked and lost in the same breath.

I would suggest that floating lines with small flies are the order of the day and that you need to keep at it. You can't catch if your fly is not in the water!!!!.
